Scratch Educational Game
Chantal Schmidt
IT 9A
Task 1:
Introduction: In this stage of my project (creating an educational game with Scratch), I will be collecting the information I collected in the previous stage (Investigation Stage), design various game ideas, pick one and plan how I will create it. I will be using the chart below to help me decide whether I want to do a trivia game, a math game or maybe something else. Not only will I chose what I want to do, but after I have made my final choice I will be planning my game and plan what to do and when, making a schedule. My choice of game will depend on practicality, personal interest and what is the most educational for all ages. I will go through all steps listed below on my Design and Plan paper, to choose, design and plan my idea of a perfect, educational game, hence the name of this stage. I will use the information I have collected in the previous stage, Investigation, by brainstorming to then make a successful game, created with Scratch. I hope I will get a good grade, because I have a quite a few ideas for my games, which I do not want to waste on a bad project. I will achieve my desired performance, I will try to stay very focused, complete all tasks on time and with great care, fulfill my design specifications and follow my storyboard or plan. This way I should be able to achieve my goal of at least a 6. I should find inspiration and guidance from other creator or students on the Scratch website. Hopefully the create stage goes the way I planned it, since it would avoid such a hassle, but even if it doesn't, I'd have an assortment of back up plan B's. Listed below is my entire plan.
DESIGN
Task 2: Designs
-
sketches 5 different

For the Trivia game, I want to make it similar to the one in timezone with the spinning wheel that determines what topic the questions will be. Once the topic is chosen, a screen like the one to left will appear and it should look like a gameshow. You can compete with friends by choosing in order. For example, player 1 gets to pick first, then player 2 etc.
For the Language game, I want to make it similar to memrise which teaches us new languages online by picking or writing the correct answer. The difficulty increases with each correct answer. Just like the Trivia Game, you can play with friends an d choose topics to learn from, such as Vocabulary and Grammar and Culture.
For the Math game, I want a layout similar to the messenger game, but instead of actually using your finger to put the ball in the basket, you’ll have to do math or answer questions and if your answer is correct, you score and if not you have to start over.
For the Mystery game, I want a layout similar to the sketch on the left you look for missing and hidden items in pictures and solve crimes with hints and clues. This idea might not be as educational as the others.
For this math game, I want the background to look like you’re in a car and you’re racing other people. The only way you can win the game is by answering the questions fast enough, beating the other racers.
-
Think of the practicalities (what is possible) - check your investigation information
-
Labels and full description (detailed)
-
Trivia (Pop culture, Geography, Sciences, History, Sports)
-
Language Games (Memrise)
-
Math Basketball (Ex: 1/2 meters and an angle of…)
-
Mystery (Detective)
-
Speed Math Game (Know what 34+57 is within 10 seconds, time decreases gradually)
Task 3: Brainstorming
-
Use the chart to decide which style of the project would be most appropriate.

Task 4: Conclusion Best Design (500 words)
Explain (justify) your decision as a concluding paragraph. Full Description (Maybe a hybrid of different designs)
I think the majority of these designs are very good, like Design #1, Design #2, Design #3 and Design #5. All of the mentioned above fulfill my most of my design specifications and should be appropriate games, except for Design #4 which was supposed to be a mystery game. I think it would not make a good game, because it only meets one of my requirements out of 6. It doesn’t have a level and point system, it doesn’t teach anything except logic and common sense, I am not sure if the information would be accurate, since I am just a student who doesn’t know too much about the world and politics, it can’t be multiplayer and the content might be too inappropriate for some ages, but I think one could be interested in this game, since some people like solving mysteries. In my opinion neither of my math games would be very entertaining, even though they meet almost all of my Design Specifications, since a large amount of people in this school don’t like math class, especially doing math outside of the classroom. Yes, it is appropriate for all ages. Yes, it is educational. Yes, it does get the player(s) frustrated and competitive, but overall just don’t think people would enjoy my game very much and I don’t think I would even enjoy creating it. Out of all of my ideas, the Trivia Game and the Language game are the best choice for me. They fulfill all Design Specifications I set for myself: They’d have a level and point system, since when answering a question correctly, you receive one point and the difficulty increases with every question you answer correctly. Both games are educational, teaching basic knowledge and random yet important facts about our world or teaching vocabulary and/ or grammar of a new language. They would contain accurate and up to date information, since I would easily be able to look up information and speak the language fluently. Both games could be multi and single player, because it is always more fun to compete with someone, especially in Trivia Games. Everyone could play either game, since being a school project I wouldn’t add inappropriate content either way. When going to a local arcade, for example Timezone in Ayala, you see a lot of people from all ages play the trivia game with family, friends or even complete strangers. Last but not least, I feel like this game will be liked (at least to an extent), since as mentioned above, you can’t really go wrong with a trivia game, since the modern human is very competitive and likes to play simple games with family, friends and strangers. I think I should merge Trivia and Language to create a hybrid of the two, so I can learn a new language while getting to know culture and basic knowledge more and more. Two in one! Get questions asked in one language and answer in another with family, friends and more! Learn a language in a fun and new way!
PLAN
Task 5:
-
List the equipment and materials you will need to make your chosen design/project
-
Make a storyboard explaining what ‘steps’ you need to do to make your chosen design and remember to include other materials (images, mp3 and etc.)
-
Estimate how long each step will take to complete.
Storyboard chart – Use landscape and add extra ‘steps’ as you need them.
